Ürgüp, after sunset.
A living landmark
Built between 1726 and 1727, Ürgüp's historic bathhouse remains part of the city's living architectural fabric.
Constructed in local cut stone, restored between 1900 and 1902 and still in use, the building continues to hold the same warmth and rhythm that have kept it open for nearly three centuries.
Architecture at a glance

01
Local honey-toned ashlar, laid in tight courses.

02
The göbek taşı, at the centre of the hot room.

03
Marble basins around the bathing space.
The hammam journey
A traditional Turkish bath is a slow progression through spaces of increasing warmth, each shaped by the architecture around it. At Ürgüp Hamam the sequence has changed very little since the eighteenth century.
01
Enter beneath the changing-room dome and prepare in a private cabin.
02
Warm the body gradually beneath domed openings that admit soft daylight.
03
Move into the intermediate space that leads to the hot room.
04
Step through the arch that separates the warm and hot rooms.
05
Rest on the heated marble platform at the centre of the hot room.
06
Rinse in warm water from the traditional marble basins.
07
Return to the cooling room and rest before leaving.
Section 06
The plan of a Turkish bathhouse is not decorative. It is a machine for moving people through temperature. Cool at the entrance, warm at the centre, hot at the far end — with a water reservoir and furnace tucked behind the hot room, still in the same place after nearly three centuries.
The domes above the cooling and hot rooms allow steam to rise while keeping heat in. The star-shaped openings admit soft daylight without opening the interior to weather. Every element is shaped by the physics of water, air and stone.

A day in Ürgüp
Ürgüp sits at the eastern edge of Cappadocia's most-visited valleys. After a day of walking, museum visits or driving between viewpoints, a hammam visit is a considered end to the day — quiet, warm and rooted in the town itself.
