What to Wear in a Turkish Hammam: A Practical Packing Guide
Swimwear, the peştemal, footwear and personal items for a first Turkish hammam visit in Ürgüp or elsewhere in Türkiye.
What should you wear in a Turkish hammam? For most visitors, the clearest answer is swimwear with a traditional peştemal wrap. Customs differ a little from one bathhouse to another, so use this guide as a packing list and ask any venue-specific questions when you book.
A hammam is a warm, wet place with marble floors and changing rooms. The best clothing is simple, comfortable and easy to change. A few practical items are enough.
Swimwear
Bring swimwear that feels secure while sitting, walking and pouring water. A one-piece swimsuit, a bikini, swim shorts or fitted swimwear all work. Choose something you already know is comfortable rather than wearing a new item for the first time.
The peştemal
A peştemal is the traditional lightweight cotton wrap of the Turkish bath. It is absorbent, quick to handle and less bulky than a standard towel, and it is worn around the body in the changing and bathing areas. At Ürgüp Hamam, the peştemal and towels are provided.
A dry change of clothes
Pack clean underwear and comfortable clothes for afterwards. Loose, breathable clothing is easier to put on after time in a warm room than tight jeans or complicated layers. Cappadocia evenings can feel cold when you step outside, so bring the outer layer the season needs.
A small separate bag keeps dry clothes organised, and a waterproof pouch is useful for damp swimwear — especially if you go on to dinner.
Footwear and moving on marble
Wet marble asks for careful steps. Outdoor shoes stay in the changing area; follow the team's guidance about footwear in each room, walk rather than hurry and use handholds where they are available.
Jewellery, glasses and electronics
Leave valuable jewellery, watches and unnecessary electronics at your hotel. Heat, water and steam are not kind to delicate items. If you wear glasses, bring a case; lenses mist quickly in the hot room.
Phones and cameras stay out of the bathing rooms: to keep the bath private for every guest, photos and videos are not taken inside the hammam.
Personal toiletries
Bring any skincare or hair products you consider essential, in a small bag. Strong fragrances and glass containers are best left out. If you have allergies or sensitivities, mention them before any product is used.
What not to bring
You do not need formal clothes, heavy towels, expensive accessories or a large day bag. The simplest packing list is swimwear, dry clothes, a waterproof pouch, personal essentials and a seasonal outer layer — pack for water, warmth and an easy change of clothes.
Before leaving your hotel
